 Perfect for arthritis sufferersOct 30, 2009
I have osteoarthritis in my thumb and psoriatic arthritis in my fingers and elbows. A trackball is perfect for me. The ball is loose for easy cleaning and practically floats. The buttons are large and easy to operate. The only downside is no scrolling wheel. Scrolling is performed by pressing the left and right buttons together. I don't get it right every time, but at least the option is there. I would buy another to replace this one.

The Kensington optical trackball works exactly as described. This is wonderful if you use it on your desk. It is accurate and easy to use. The main drawback for me is that I don't use it on a desktop, but use it on the arm of my chair with my laptop. Since it is wired, I always have to find a place for it when I get up. The most annoying thing about it is the ball simply sits on the unit, with no resistance at all, so anytime it gets tipped over, the ball goes rolling away, and you have to get down on the floor and find it. I have used other trackballs that did click in, but they were much more expensive, and also not as reliable in the long term as this. I also like the feel in my hand better than any other trackball or mouse. I would definitely buy it again.

I've had a few of the old style orbit track ball, and I loved them. so when
I bought a new computer I figured I would upgrade from my old Orbit.
Ordering and deliver from Amazon are always great, but this product
is second rate. The body feels flimsy and the one deal breaker is that
the track ball itself does not stay in the body of the device, it just sits
in a slight depression and falls out with ease.
The old Orbit had the ball snap into the body of the device and worked
flawlessly, why make such a stupid change??
I'm sending this back without ever plugging it into my new MacBook Pro.

This is an excellent product, especially considering the cost of alternatives. As mentioned by others, it has no scroll wheel or alternative scroll function. If that is a make-or-break for you - DON'T BUY THIS TRACKBALL (I don't see why anyone would EVER whine about no scroll wheel or alternative when the product is CLEARLY advertised as not having that function).
Next... all the whining about stalling because of black spots on the ball itself. Again - WHY ARE YOU WHINING? The product has a 5 year warranty - 5 WHOLE YEARS. Call Kensington, explain the problem and they will either send you a new ball or an entire new mouse (that's what I got years ago when I complained about worn-out parts in one of their earlier mechanical track balls... they sent me TWO new replacement trackballs in 1 shipment!!!). This is the sort of thing warranties are for - take advantage of it and stop whining!
My Orbit Trackball is nearly 2 years old and the ball had stopped rolling with the ease it had when new. I figured nearly 2 years of fingerprint oils and other dirt had finally clogged the works (the only other maintenance performed on the trackball has been every week or two, removing the ball and flicking out the dust that had accumulated around the 3 white bearings in the housing. Takes maybe 10 seconds. So anyway, thinking the fingerprint oils from nearly 2 years of use had made the ball sticky, I cleaned the ball and the 3 white bearings inside the housing with Windex. Well... after cleaning, they were certainly clean and oil-free, but now the ball really didn't want to roll easily. It was even less responsive to being rolled than it had been before cleaning. So I rubbed the ball over my hands and fingers to get more oils from my skin on the ball and it was somewhat better, but still not like it was when new. For a couple of weeks I thought about what to do, searched online (didn't find anything) and finally decided to put Pledge (spray for household dusting) on the ball (not on the bearings inside the housing). So I sprayed some Pledge on a paper towel, then wiped the ball with the dampened towel and buffed off the excess. WOW! Easy rolling of the ball was fully restored. It's just like new now.
Controlling a trackball can be tricky for users changing from a mouse but PLEASE give the trackball at least 1 month before giving up. I control the ball with my middle and index fingers - usually they are STRAIGHT with the ball between the 2 slightly spread fingers. My little finger clicks 1 button, my thumb clicks the other button (the ring finger is rarely or never used in controlling the trackball). You CAN get used to this new way of controlling the trackball and you WILL LOVE it compared to moving a mouse around. I can put the trackball on the arm of a chair and use my laptop in places a mouse would be impossible. I also was getting wrist pain from using a mouse (and "straight" keyboards) and that has not been an issue for more than 10 years since I switched to a trackballs exclusively and ergo keyboards.
I've seen others trying to convert from mouse to trackball come up with a lot of completely impossible hand configurations trying to use the trackball making the conversion process impossible - nobody could EVER successfully use the trackball the way they were trying to use it. So keep in mind the hand position tips I described above... THEY WORK and will help you get a grasp on the switchover to a trackball. With a trackball this good, a mouse is officially a stupid way to control a computer cursor. (But you have to give this trackball at least a month of use to learn that if this is your first trackball!!!! - Kensington also provides a 90-Day return policy in addition to the 5 year warranty. If you simply can't get the hang of the trackball in less than 90 days you can get a complete refund.) There should be NO WHINING about this product - they offer everything any buyer could ever want or expect from a $30 product. And they really stand behind their products unlike some of the "companies" with names you never heard of before.
My 5-star rating is based on what this product IS and NOT on what I wish it was. If I wished for a trackball with more buttons or a scroll feature, I would have BOUGHT a trackball with more buttons or scroll wheel. Marking this product down for not having those features is lame - it is very clear from the literature exactly what the product has (a ball and 2 buttons). As a $30 product with a ball and 2 buttons, a 5-year warranty that is honestly supported by Kensington, and a 90-day money back guarantee plus perfect operation (Windows Vista Ultimate in my case), this is clearly a 5-star product.
